As Carter hit his 13 month anniversary he was making his first unassisted steps around the house. Somehow crawling wasn't his thing. To this day (now at 14 months) he still really doesn't crawl much.
The first few weeks of him walking unassisted still required a lot of help from us. While he was indeed walking from object to object in a straight line, he would often fall on his can along the way. Since he couldn't (admit to us that he could) crawl, he would cry until we picked him up again. It didn't take him long to figure out how to get on his hands and knees, push himself up to the "down dog" position and then stand up. That process was hit or miss of course at first, but he's got it down now.
As of today, Carter is cruising all over the house. He's had tons of the usual yard sales that you would expect from someone who is just learning how to walk. The house is pretty well padded up at the moment so Carter is going to have to work to hurt himself. Mom and Dad just have to remember to keep the baby gates closed and wee man away from the pellet stove. He's already had one brief encounter with the hot stove so we are hoping that will have burned in (hehe) some memories that will steer him clear in the future.
