Rites of passage
Life with big boy Ryan Both kids of had a sort of rite of passage recently

Carter's rite related to his mobility.  Yesterday he took his first real steps on his own!  He's been cruising (very quickly I might add) around the furniture and walls these past few weeks but he has resisted any sort of walking without something to hold onto.  He always needed to be clutching onto something to keep his balance.  Yesterday Daddy and Ryan were on the other side of the room.  Mom and Carter were on the other.  As you might guess, Carter always wants to be near his brother.   All Mom had to do is point him towards us and he was off!  3 or 4 steps later he was on his rump again, but that was the start of several other successful launches.

With this arrival, Carter has skillfully avoided crawling altogether.  He can turn over from front to back and he can turn around 180 degrees, but he's had very little interest in the whole crawling thing.  With him walking a bit on his own, it's looking like crawling is over before it began!

Now we really need to make sure the baby gates are closed.

Ryan had his little rite of passage a few weeks ago when we were out on the boat.  After we had been out awhile, Ryan announced that he had to go to the bathroom.  So we did what all boys do: put him on the back of the boat and told him to tinkle in the water.  With remarkably little hesitation he dropped his drawers and let it loose.

He giggled.

So did we.

He said "Look guys I'm going pee-pee in the water"

We said "Yes you are kid, yes you are".  And so begins a beautiful friendship: man and nature.
